In joint operations with state police, the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended four suspected smugglers and seized more than 44 tonnes of sugar in South Garo Hills before it could be smuggled into Bangladesh.
The two operations were conducted yesterday. The four suspected smugglers are all Indian nationals. Six vehicles were also seized.
The 1st Battalion of the BSF Meghalaya was involved in one of the operations when its personnel noted suspicious movement along the international border.
As a result, 790 bags of sugar were seized and four Indians from Goalpara, Assam, were apprehended.
In the other operation, troops of the 200th Battalion of the BSF along with police intercepted two vehicles loaded with 94 bags of sugar.
The seized goods and apprehended persons were handed over to Rongra police station for further legal action.
