Shillong, Dec 29: The central government has sanctioned funds for a Government Model Degree College at Mawthengkut village, Mawshynrut, in West Khasi Hills, under the PM-USHA (RUSA) scheme, which should bring a measure of relief to local students and parents.
The college, estimated to cost Rs 15 crore, will benefit students from Mawshynrut and nearby areas, including Rambrai-Jyrngam. Cabinet minister and Mawshynrut MLA Methodios Dkhar inspected the proposed site, thanking the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and Education Minister for their support.
Dkhar said the college will reduce parents’ financial burden, eliminating the need for students to seek higher education outside the area.
Meghalaya has received approval for two such colleges, with the other at Jalaphet in East Jaintia Hills.
