Shillong, Jul 28: The Home Guard & Civil Defence, West Jaintia Hills, in collaboration with the Health Department, conducted a mock drill at Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School Jowai.
The exercise aimed to educate students on disaster preparedness and response, promoting a culture of safety and resilience.
The drill began with a siren, prompting students to evacuate the school building. A simulated scenario assumed some students were missing or injured and trained students were directed to search, assist, and carry the injured to a designated first aid area.
During an awareness session, District Nodal Officer for Disaster Management Dr. Arwin Khonglah emphasised that the term “disaster” encompasses more than just natural events like floods, fires, or earthquakes. He explained that disasters include incidents leading to injury, loss of life, or property destruction, such as landslides, food contamination, or disease outbreaks.
The drill was carried out under the guidance of SI P.Kharbuli and his team, in coordination with the Health Department.
