Meghalaya lost four precious lives and saw well over 2,000 homes damaged in the spate of stormy weather that has hit the state in the last few days.
Informing this today, Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla said that 10,263 people were affected by the bad weather, with 160 homes completely wrecked and 2,199 partially damaged.
“Out of the four deaths, two were due to landslides at Mawlat, under Mawkynrew block,” Shylla informed, adding that several other landslides took place in East and West Khasi Hills.
Ri-Bhoi was the worst-affected of Meghalaya’s 12 districts, with 47 villages in Umsning block and 29 in Bhoirymbong block affected on April 14, Shylla said.
Under Mawthadraishan block, in Eastern West Khasi Hills, three homes were severely damaged and 690 partially damaged due to heavy rains and hail on April 17 and 18.
In Wapung block of East Jaiñtia Hills, one house was damaged in a fire on April 15 and a wall collapsed due to the heavy rain. Six cattle also died in a lightning strike on the same day in Amlarem block, West Jaiñtia Hills.
Meanwhile, in Nongstoiñ and Mawshynrut block, 695 homes were partially damaged and two completely destroyed after storms struck on April 17 and 19.
The minister further urged citizens to be alert with further rain predicted over the next few days.
