Meghalaya is one of the best performing states in terms of utilisation of central government funds and that is why it has been granted an additional Rs 300 crore by the Centre, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today.
He assured that Meghalaya, which invariably runs budget deficits, has no problems in terms of financing.
“In fact, Meghalaya has utilized the funds in a very efficient manner in different projects and different schemes,” Sangma said. “Meghalaya is one of the few states that have already utilised all the funds from the capital investment fund, which was given to all the states, and hence we had urged the government of India to give additional funds to us.”
For the 2020-23 period, the state received around Rs 600 crore from the central government and has now been sanctioned an additional 50 percent, or Rs 300 crore.
Almost immediately after his National People’s Party won the recent state election, Sangma jetted off to New Delhi but he described this as an important trip for Meghalaya. The CM said that he received a positive response on the basic discussions that he had with specific ministries.
Reiterating that it was not a specific issue trip but more of a generic one, he added, “I felt it appropriate that I should pay a visit and meet all the concerned ministers and requested them that like they have been supporting the state government and the state as a whole in the past five years, they continue to do so.”
