The State Congress leadership will meet here on March 4 to discuss the failure of the five rebel party MLAs to respond to the show-cause notice issued to them.
During the proposed meeting, the party will decide on submitting a detailed report to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on the failure by the five legislators to reply to the show-cause notice.
The Congress has on February 14 suspended the membership of Congress Legislature Party leader Ampareen Lyngdoh, Process T. Sawkmie, Mohendro Rapsang, Kimfa Sidney Marbaniang and Mayralborn Syiem for extending support to the BJP-back MDA government without the knowledge and consent of the party.
State Congress president Vincent Pala today said that the ten days time given to the five MLAs has expired on February 24 but they are yet to respond to the show cause.
“In view of this, we will meet on March 4 to discuss the matter and accordingly submit a report to the AICC,” Pala said adding, “The decision on the next course of action will be taken by AICC.”
After the Congress MLAs were suspended, Ampareen Lyngdoh had stated that the five MLAs would take a collective decision on the matter and make known about the same in twelve days.
The decision by the suspended MLAs not to respond to the show-cause notice indicated they have made up their mind to face any action by the party including expulsion.
Recently, four out of the five rebel MLAs have been given government appointments.
Sawkmie and Rapsang have been appointed as co-chairmen of Meghalaya New and Renewable Energy Development Agency. Marbaniang has been made co-chairman of Meghalaya Government Construction Company while Syiem was appointed co-chairman of Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation.
The Congress party in the State has faced a crisis since Pala took over as State party chief on August 25, 2021.
Twelve party MLAs led by former chief minister Mukul Sangma, had quit the party and joined Trinamool Congress in November 2021.
The rebellion by the five remaining party MLAs by joining the MDA government has left Congress with no more MLA in the 60-member Assembly.
