North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has sought the intervention of the government to address the issue of acute water shortage crippling Riatsamthiah locality.
Nongrum in a letter to PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak and Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said, the issue of water scarcity is a longstanding problem and that the dry season must not only be an excuse.
The dorbar shnong and Riatsamthiah Women Social Welfare Organisation had recently complained to the MLA that the PHE and the Shillong Municipal Board have not been able to resolve the crisis and residents are bearing the brunt of water scarcity.
Urging the ministers to take serious note and find a solution, he said people have no reason to face the problem as they accordingly paid their taxes. “There are areas where water is surplus and others facing acute water scarcity. The disparity within the constituency raises questions about why such discrepancies exist. These departments PHE and SMB must visit the ground zero to understand the exact problem, neither identify the problem nor solve the problem,” he added.
Nongrum said the PHE and SMB should work towards convergence and since these two cannot separate one another, they should not shift responsibility but collaborate sincerely, transparently and honestly.
“By working diligently and with a sense of shared purpose, we can overcome water-related challenges and ensure a better quantity as well a quality of life for all citizens,” he said.
