Siju-Rongara MLA, Rakkam Sangma, has written to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to propose that an integrated check gate be set up in Baghmara, South Garo Hills, to help the export/import sector to grow.
“The North East region is among the most endowed,” Rakkam said in the letter today. “In an effort to improve trade and commerce with Bangladesh as well as develop the tourism industry in the region, I propose the set up of an integrated check gate at Baghmara.”
The National People’s Party legislator, who is also the chairman of the state’s Health Advisory Board, pointed out that the region is home to more than 20 medicinal plants.
“We also have 824 varieties out of an estimated 6,000 medicinal plants in places like Mawsynram and Balpakram. Besides these are the many waterfalls, caves, rivers and rock formations that will be tremendous attractions, both nationally and internationally,” he added.
Rakkam urged the CM to take up the matter with the Land Ports Authority of India and other central agencies for the creation of the check gate in Baghmara, which lies close to the border with Bangladesh.
The setting up of an integrated check gate will allow for trade as well as movement of people from both countries, which will be highly beneficial due to its closeness with the neighbouring country.
“Dhaka is only 182 kilometres from Baghmara. This check gate will not only benefit both countries in terms of health, education and economy but will also cut down the illegal activities taking place between the two,” felt Rakkam.
