Shillong, Apr 6: A decomposed body of a woman was found dumped in a drain between Nongrah Lummarboh and Lapalang here today, with police suspecting a case of homicide.
The body, which was stuffed inside a plastic sack commonly used for courier services, was first noticed by local residents, who promptly alerted the police.
“It is a case of homicide and the body is suspected to be that of a 39-year-old woman, identified as Eilang Phawa, who went missing from her residence at Lawjynriew, Nongthymmai since March 20, 2026,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told reporters.
He said the woman originally hailed from West Jaintia Hills district and family members arrived at the scene and assisted in identifying the body.
Police have sent the body to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, a neighbour told police that he had heard someone dumping a “heavy object” near his house late at night last week, but did not pay attention, assuming it to be garbage.
“A suspect has been identified. Necessary action will be taken to arrest all those involved,” Syiem said, adding that further investigation is underway.
