A new public committee known as the Regional Council Demand Committee (RCDC) was established on Saturday during a special meeting held in Babedpara, West Garo Hills.
The primary objective of the committee is to enhance and advocate for the demand for a regional council for indigenous minority tribes of Meghalaya.
KC Boro, a former government minister, has been appointed as the chairman of the committee. Ananda Koch will serve as the general secretary, while Promod Koch has been selected as the chairman of the advisory board. The committee has also appointed Bhabani Hajong, Dharmeswar Koch, Nabin Boro and Sahadev Rabha as vice-presidents. The roles of assistant general secretaries have been assigned to Rupkumar Boro, Ramcharan Hajong and Sanjay Rabha.
The RCDC has been formed to bolster the ongoing movement initiated by the Meghalaya Indigenous Minority Tribals Forum (MIMTF), which has previously submitted a memorandum to the central government, Governor of Meghalaya and the chairman of the National Scheduled Tribes Commission.
The MIMTF represents various indigenous minority tribal communities, including the Hajong, Koch, Rabha, Boro-Kachari, Mann and Karbi tribes.
The committee will work closely with the MIMTF and has emphasised that it operates as a public body, independent of political affiliations and party influences. A total of 54 members attended the inaugural meeting during which the committee was officially constituted.
