Director General of Police Lajja Ram Bishnoi has said that militancy is at its lowest levels and peace talks are ongoing with still active rebel groups.
“It is under control and we are getting full cooperation from the people,” Bishnoi told reporters after a review meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister here today.
By and large, he was also approving of the law and order situation, saying that most crimes are not related to disturbances but are fairly routine. However, to cope with future challenges, the police service needs to be strengthened through the ways discussed at the meeting, the DGP added.
When asked about the Meghalaya High Court not happy with the performance of the state police in checking illegal coal transportation, the DGP said, “We are going as per the high court orders wherever the mistakes are pointed out we are trying to plug the loopholes.”
He said that the “police strength is not adequate to dominate each and every inch of the land” as illegalities are carried out through the jungle.
“By and large it is under control now and whatever the direction from the court or government given to the police department we will definitely try to follow those,” he added.
