Mid-day meal workers will go on a hunger strike in Shillong on May 31 as the deadline for the centre and state governments to take action on their demand to enhance their honorarium and clearance of their long pending dues ended today.
The decision was taken by the mid-day meal workers under the banner of the All Jaiñtia Mid Day Meal Worker Union (Central Executive Committee) at a meeting held at Dorbar Halls Loomïongkjam, Jowai.
The union has been demanding an honorarium of Rs 1000 per month, which has not been paid for five months. The honorarium was not paid for the period from November 2021 and April 2022.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that that Rs. 18, 06,000 honorarium was released by the office of the Director of School Education and Literacy to all cooks under the sub-divisional school education office, Jowai.
However, union president Khroo L Pariat said not all cooks received their honorariums.
