Metbah Lyngdoh, should have resigned from his party, the UDP, upon being elected as Speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly, party leader Bindo Lanong said today.
Drawing on his legal and constitutional expertise, Lanong said that a Speaker, by virtue of being “non-partisan umpire” inside the legislature, should resign from whatever party they belong to immediately after being elected to the position of Speaker.
He said this after the opposition Congress party first moved and then withdrew a motion of no confidence in Lyngdoh, without specifying its reasons in wanting him removed.
Once they give up or are voted out of the Speaker’s chair, they can then rejoin their old political parties, Lanong, a former Deputy Chief Minister and former Speaker, stated.
He called for the Constitution to be amended in order to make this mandatory.
