Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma yesterday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Lyngdoh submitted a letter to the PM urging him to consider extending financial assistance towards the completion of the new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang.
“Though the work for the first phase has started from 2018, the structural part of construction of the building is progressing well. However, construction work is hampered due to lack of funds with the state government,” the Speaker said in his letter.
The detailed project report estimated Rs 517 crore across two phases as the cost of the new Assembly complex. The first phase for construction includes furnishing of the main Assembly building, while the second phase is for residential quarters for the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and others.
Meghalaya will be celebrating 50 years of statehood next year and Lyngdoh claimed that it is the aspiration of the citizens that the new Assembly is completed by then.
