The newly elected MLA from Gambegre constituency Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma will take her oath as the member of the State Assembly on November 27.
The oath will be administered by Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma at his office chamber in the Assembly secretariat here.
Mehtab, the wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma won the Gambegre Assembly by-election securing 12,678 votes.
The by-election was held on November 13 after the sitting MLA, Saleng Sangma, vacated the seat following his election to the Lok Sabha from the Tura constituency.
The by-election recorded a high voter turnout of 90.93 per cent, with 33,088 voters casting their votes.
Mehtab, a medical professional making her electoral debut, defeated several prominent candidates in a fiercely contested race.
She defeated her nearest rival Sadhiarani M. Sangma of Trinamool Congress by a margin of 4,594 votes.
Sadhiarani, wife of three-time former Rangsakona MLA Zenith Sangma, polled 8,084 votes.
Congress candidate Jingjang M. Marak, who finished third, garnered 7,695 votes while BJP candidate Bernard Marak could secure only 710 votes.
With this win, NPP’s strength in the State Assembly has gone up to 32 giving the party the majority on its own in the House of 60.
This is also the first time that NPP managed to win Gambegre seat.
NPP had contested the seat at least four times in the past but lost, finishing third or fourth.
This time, with NPP winning Gambegre, it was a big blow to the Congress which won the seat twice in 2018 and 2023 through Saleng A. Sangma.
