Meghalaya’s performance in the North Eastern Region District Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Index 2023-24 shows improvement, with all districts rising to ‘Front Runner’ status except East Jaintia Hills, which remains a ‘Performer’.
However, the state still lags behind other northeastern states, with none of its districts featuring in the top 10 list. Several factors contribute to this.
Despite overall progress, disparities within Meghalaya’s districts persist. East Khasi Hills has emerged as the top-performing district with a score of 73, while East Jaintia Hills scored 63, indicating a significant gap.
Meghalaya struggles with the Quality Education indicator (SDG 4), where 72.73% of its districts fall into the ‘Aspirant’ category, highlighting the need for improvement in education.
While 63.64% of districts are in the ‘Performer’ category for No Poverty (SDG 1), there is still room for progress in reducing poverty.
In comparison with other states of the region like Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura which have consistently performed well, with all their districts achieving ‘Front Runner’ status.
Mizoram’s Hnahthial district tops the Northeast with a score of 81.43, showcasing the potential for improvement.
Meghalaya has taken steps to improve its SDG performance, including launching a mobile application and dynamic district-level dashboard for SDG data collection and dissemination.
This technology initiative aims to empower stakeholders with real-time data for informed decision-making.
The state’s “CM Catalytic Fund” initiative provides districts with financial support to design and implement local solutions to SDG-related challenges, promoting flexibility and innovation.
To bridge the gap, Meghalaya can focus on – strengthening education by improving quality of education and reducing disparities in educational outcomes.
On the poverty alleviation front the state needs to implement targeted initiatives to reduce poverty and promote economic growth.
Meghalaya also needs data-driven governance, therefore by leveraging on data and technology which will in turn to inform policy decisions and track progress.
The state also needs collaboration and partnerships through building partnerships with organizations and stakeholders to support SDG achievement.
