Editor,
Every time Meghalaya’s public servants or teachers take to the streets to demand fair wages, the government gives the same tired answer: “The government is on it and is examining the issue.” Recently, when Khasi tourist drivers asked for policies to ease tensions with their counterparts from Assam, it seems the concerned minister said the same thing.
This has become the default response of our ministers. When asked why problems remain unsolved, they just say the matter is “under examination.” But we, the people of Meghalaya, are getting tired. Our state cannot be run like a test paper, where leaders keep saying they are “studying” without ever giving answers. Meghalaya is home to hardworking people like teachers who shape futures, drivers who work to support their families, and government employees who keep public services running.
The government must remember that when these people raise their voices, it’s not for luxury. It’s for their livelihoods and dignity. But the habit of avoiding decisions has only caused more frustration. We, the voters, are asking: How long will our leaders keep examining? How many years will pass before they finally give results? Running the state is not a classroom where endless delays are okay. Decisions must be made, policies put into action, and accountability shown. If our ministers keep hiding behind excuses, they risk losing not just an “exam” but the trust of the people they have worn in God’s name to serve. Last of all, Meghalaya deserves leaders who listen, act, and make things happen, not that leaders who get stuck in the loop of “examination mode.”
