A 38-year-old man became the 149th Covid-related fatality in Meghalaya today and the first reported in the state since February 7.
Debaris Lyngdoh (38), of Umktieh, Umroi, Ri-Bhoi, was admitted to Woodland Hospital in Shillong on March 18 and passed away today morning. Cause of death was severe Covid-19 pneumonia with severe sepsis.
There were also four new cases and six recoveries from the disease, all of which were reported in East Khasi HIlls.
In all, Meghalaya has had 14,012 Covid-19 cases, of which 28 are active, 13,835 have recovered and 149 have died from the virus. The recovery rate is 98.74 percent. The fatality rate is 1.06 percent.
Meanwhile, in South West Khasi Hills, the house of Darihun Nongtnger in Nongjri has been declared as a containment zone due to recent high-risk and low-risk contact with Covid-19 positive cases, the Deputy Commissioner informed.
In Shillong, the DC of East Khasi Hills urged residents not to let their guard down when it comes to Covid-19 protocols if they want to avoid a surge in cases in the district.
“We appeal to the public to not let their guard down and wear masks at all times when venturing out,” Isawanda Laloo said. “Some cities in the country have gone for another lockdown because of a resurgence of Covid-19. We have to remain careful if we want to avoid another surge in the city. Be disciplined, wear masks and maintain distancing. Non-wearing of masks in public places will be met with fines and penalties.”
