Shillong, Apr 1: The government of Meghalaya and Starlink India formalised partnership through the signing of a letter of intent marking a significant step forward in enhancing digital connectivity in the state, primarily focusing on addressing the challenges faced in remote regions.
This partnership with Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, is expected to hasten the rollout of high-speed internet connectivity through the much-awaited satellite-based technology offered by Starlink.
The initiative promises to bridge the digital divide, foster inclusive growth, and unlock new opportunities for communities across Meghalaya paving the way for a more connected, empowered, and future-ready society.
The signing ceremony saw the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, senior officials, representatives from Starlink including Gwynnc Shotwell, President & COO SpaceX and others.
Additional Chief Secretary Sampath Kumar shared the vision of the state in leveraging technology to cater to the needs of the citizens in terms of providing quality healthcare services, better education and driving community engagement for development activities.
Shotwell acknowledged the government’s active involvement in taking the state forward through the use of technology.
The chief minister highlighted the challenges faced by the state government in rendering services to the citizens of Meghalaya due to unreliable internet connectivity as the region has a unique topography.
Meghalaya is located in the North-eastern part of the country and any successful pilot of Starlink in this region will ensure wider acceptability of the technology. He expressed optimism that this collaboration with Starlink will usher in a new pathway for development and enhance digital connectivity in order to support key sectors such as education, healthcare, aspirations district inclusion, security and disaster management and economic development in the state.
