Shillong, Mar 9: A media delegation from Meghalaya is currently on a six-day exposure tour to Sikkim, organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Shillong.
Today, they visited the ICAR – National Research Centre for Orchids at Pakyong, accompanied by PIB officials from Gangtok. The visit provided the team with invaluable insights into the region’s rich orchid diversity and the growing floriculture sector.
At the research center, the delegation interacted with scientists and officials to understand the ongoing efforts in orchid conservation and research.
Following the discussions, they attended the Indian Orchid Festival 2026, themed “Orchids for Beauty and Prosperity.” This four-day event showcases Sikkim’s extensive orchid biodiversity and fosters the state’s position as a prominent hub for orchid cultivation.
During the festival, the visiting journalists observed a wide range of orchid varieties on display, including improved hybrid varieties as well as indigenous and native orchid species sourced from across the Northeast region.
The delegation also interacted with orchid growers, exhibitors and experts participating in the festival.
The team also had the opportunity to meet orchid farmers from Meghalaya engaged in orchid cultivation and floriculture-based livelihoods.
Notably, a cymbidium orchid named “Queen of Heart” was sold for an impressive Rs. 40,000, illustrating both the value and appeal of these exquisite plants.
