Shillong, Sep 5: A landmark agreement was signed between Meghalaya and Japan that focuses on building pathways in healthcare, caregiving, hospitality, IT, and other sectors.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo with the Asean One Japan, which was attended by Minister in charge of Labour, Employment & Skill Development Shakliar Warjri.
“This MoU is not just an agreement— it is a gateway for our young people to access international careers while deepening the cultural and economic ties between Meghalaya and Japan,” Warjri said.
Asean One Chairman and CEO Mr. Toshiaki Nishikawa, has been actively engaged in building workforce mobility solutions between India and Japan.
The initiative builds on previous successful placements of Meghalayan workers in Japan, particularly in the healthcare sector. Besides providing Japanese language and cultural integration training, Japan will support the training and overseas placement of Meghalaya’s youth, starting with 500 candidates in the first year and scaling up to 5,000 in the next five years.
The MoU is an outcome of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s official visit to Japan in April 2025, where he shared his vision to create international career pathways for the youth of the State, an official press release said.
Recently, Nishikawa also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit held in Tokyo, underscoring the alignment of this initiative of making India a Global Skill Hub.
“This milestone agreement reflects a shared commitment by the Government of Meghalaya and Asean One Japan to create structured, sustainable steps for global employment—empowering youth, and strengthening India–Japan cooperation in the field of skill development and mobility,” the statement said.
