A send-off ceremony for the U-17 football team of Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School, Bhoirymbong, was held today, wishing them success before their trip to Paris.
The school finished as runners-up in the Subroto Mukherjee Cup (U-17) and was selected to represent India at the Indo-French Football Tournament in Paris to be held from March 24 to March 30.
The team is the sole representative for India who will take on four French teams of the same age category.
The touring team comprises 16 players (including two goalkeepers), one coach, one manager, and one representative from the state. The team will also have an opportunity to train with the club Olympic Lyonnais, one of the most prominent French football clubs.
Adviser to the Chief Minister Hamlet Dohling who was present at the send off expressed joy at the team getting the opportunity to play at the international level. Stating that Meghalaya’s success begins from the grassroots level, he extended his best wishes to the team. He further urged the players to be disciplined while they are far away from their country and represent the country’s passion for the sport.
Director of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department Dikki D. Shira said that it is a good opportunity for the team to gain exposure not only to international football but also to the culture and way of life in other countries.
The team was invited to participate in the 2nd edition of the Indo-French Football Tournament by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society, after their commendable performances during the tournament, held last year.
All expenses will be borne by the Department.
