Shillong, Sep 7: The Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, Justice IP Mukerji, retired on Friday on attaining the age of superannuation.
A farewell ‘full court reference’ was held at the High Court premises on the same day, attended by the Advocate General, Additional AGs, senior advocates, judicial officers, government officials, members of the bar associations, officers and staff of the registry and other guests.
Various speakers who attended the function recalled the contributions of Justice Mukerji during his tenure in Meghalaya.
During his time here, he handled and passed far reaching orders in several high profile cases such as the hawkers and street vendors case, crematorium for the Khasi and Jaintia non-Christian communities, stray dogs, environmental concerns with regard to construction of Shillong-Dawki highway, central bonded warehouse, etc.
Justice Mukerji had also played a major role in the development of judicial infrastructure in the state, an official release stated today.
Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice has appointed Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice as of yesterday until a new Chief Justice takes the reins.
