Shillong, Oct 3: Meghalaya has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country, according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The statistics are part of the NCRB’s report for 2023.
In Meghalaya, around 10 per cent of those convicted or arrested without conviction go on to be arrested again in another case in future.
In Indian Penal Code (IPC) cases, 82 out of 822 (10 per cent) persons convicted or arrested without conviction in Meghalaya are arrested again. This puts Meghalaya behind only Himachal Pradesh (29.1 per cent), Bihar (14.8 per cent), Tamil Nadu (13.0 per cent) and Mizoram (11.0 per cent) among states.
In ‘special and local law’ (SLL) cases, the figure 97 out of 908 (10.7 per cent) in Meghalaya, again only behind Himachal Pradesh (30.0 per cent), Bihar (19.3 per cent), Tamil Nadu (16.0 per cent) and Punjab (12.8 per cent) among states.
SLL refers to specific statutes enacted by the government to address particular issues beyond the scope of the IPC, such as the Arms Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the Gambling Act.
