A “Tactical Urbanism Trial Plan” was launched from IGP to DC office junction in the city today.
Tactical urbanism trial plan is a temporary, low-cost, and quick intervention that tests urban design, transportation planning, and infrastructure changes. Through this initiative the Meghalaya government with support from community aims to create more vibrant streets and walkways that enhance mobility while ensuring that streets are safe and enjoyable for everyone.
The initiative was taken up under the Reimagining Streets of the government and part of the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy formulated in January 2024, which outlines Vision 2030 that dedicates 30 per cent of road space to non-motorized transport, prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists to foster a more inclusive and safer city.
Altogether 25 students painted the streets in front of Aayakar Bhavan in the presence of officials from the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Urban Affairs Department and PWD.
This approach involves implementing visual measures such as painting, installation of traffic cones, planter boxes, road marking and signages.
Officials said the month-long trial aims to gather user feedback on these changes, making necessary revisions before proceeding with the construction of permanent infrastructure.
