The ceremonial torch relay of the 6th Meghalaya Games will arrive in Shillong from Tura on Saturday.
The torch will be brought to the MUDA two-wheeler parking lot in Shillong, where it will be displayed for one hour, providing an excellent photo opportunity for enthusiasts, athletes and members of the public.
Following this, the torch will begin its journey at 3pm from Police Bazaar, travelling through the city to Madanrting.
Meanwhile, following an inspection of the venues in Jowai, Sports and Youth Affairs Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar D expressed happiness with the preparations. For the most part, already existing infrastructure is being utilised for the Games, though renovations and improvements have been carried out for certain venues to bring them up to the required standard. Jowai lacks an appropriate swimming pool or golf course, so these two disciplines will conduct their events in Shillong.
Kumar said that one advantage of Jowai is that it is fairly compact, meaning that athletes, spectators and others will be able to get around largely on foot. He also said that one of the main reasons that the government wants to move the Meghalaya Games around the state is to give the athletes a chance to immerse themselves in the state’s different cultures and communities.
