Shillong, Feb 10: Avril Celzia Syiem, a promising young cricketer, passed away today following a prolonged illness, the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) said in a post on social media.
She died in Shillong where she was receiving treatment. Her funeral will take place on Thursday in Mairang.
“Avril was an important member of the Meghalaya U-23 and senior women’s teams and her loss will be felt acutely by her team mates, coaches and all who knew her at the MCA,” the association said in its condolence message. “She will be remembered for her warmth, tenacity and for being a role model for the state’s girls.”
Several MCA members, players and others connected with the game paid their tributes to Avril.
Former MCA president Naba Bhattacharjee said, “Deeply anguished at the passing away of young Avril. I remember her when she was in selection camp showing immense talent and being selected to represent our state. May Almighty grant eternal peace to the noble soul. Heartfelt condolences to all members of the bereaved family.”
MCA honorary secretary Rayonald Kharkamni wrote, “Rest in peace Avril great loss to MCA and family”.
