The state government today has decided to appoint an expert agency to delve deep into the subject of allegedly high levels of radiation.
Last week an environmentalist alleged that he had found high levels of radiation at Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) site in Nongbah-Jynrin, South West Khasi Hills and in a nearby river.
However, today, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong mentioned Domiasiat, West Khasi Hills as a site for the probe. Both areas are a rich source of uranium.
“The agency will study in detail and come back to the government with their findings,” Tynsong told reporters, adding that well-established agencies from inside or outside the state will be preferred.
Chief Secretary MS Rao has been given the task to identify the expert team.
