The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has sold out the people of the state by willing to give away too much land to Assam under the terms of their border agreement, Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent M Basaiawmoit said today.
In a release, the former legislator said that the VPP had been willing to give the MDA the benefit of the doubt when it came to negotiating the agreement on a ‘give-and-take’ basis but, with the inking of the deal last week, the party feels it necessary to speak out against what it sees as all give and no take from Meghalaya’s side.
In a release, Basaiawmoit said that “after the MoU (memorandum of understanding) was made public, it was found that only areas that fall under Meghalaya will be given to Assam (and not vice versa). Even more surprising is that areas which were never contentious will also be transferred to Assam. This is nothing but a complete sell out by the current government of the areas of Meghalaya.”
The VPP added a message to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong that the “border areas are not their personal property which they can do whatever they want with”.
