It’s a classic case of the phrase, ‘You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’.
Days after he extended his support to the MDA government, Mawlai MLA Process T. Sawkmie has reason to smile about.
The State government has sanctioned funds for the water supply scheme at Mawiong Umjapung, a project which Sawkmie had been pursuing for almost three years.
Sawkmie was among the five Congress MLAs who joined the BJP-backed MDA government without the knowledge and approval of the Congress.
Speaking to media persons here today, Sawkmie informed that the file for ‘Augmentation of Mawiong Water Supply Scheme’ at an estimated cost of Rs 24.25 crore was signed by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma yesterday.
“I thanked the chief minister who fulfilled his promise because in just a matter of a few days when I took up the matter, he immediately sanctioned the project,” Sawkmie said, adding, “This act will only make us want to offer more support to MDA in future in bringing about development.”
It may be noted that the five Congress rebel MLAs led by Congress Legislature Party leader, Ampareen Lyngdoh had stated before the media that their support to the State government “was to ensure that our constituencies do not suffer beyond the four-year period of hardships that we have already felt and experienced.”
