Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has expressed concern that the establishment of unauthorised toll gates is significantly impeding the operations of small businesses in the Block 2 areas of Ri-Bhoi.
“The presence of toll gates is causing substantial hindrance, especially for small-scale businesses dealing in timber, bamboo, ginger and vegetables. This issue is prevalent in Block 2, where people are raising complaints about toll gates set up by unknown entities,” Syiem remarked.
While vehemently opposing the installation of illegal toll gates on both national highways and state roads, Syiem emphasised, “I strongly believe that this should not be allowed. I am firmly against unauthorised toll gates on highways as well as on state roads.”
However, Syiem clarified that legal toll gates are acceptable, provided they have the necessary authorisation and mandate.
In recent months action has been taken to stop the workings of unauthorised toll gates on national highways, he added. Syiem welcomed this as Meghalaya relies on imports of many goods and agricultural produce and toll gate collections will invariably drive up the prices for the common man.
