Shillong, Apr 6: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has expressed optimism that the stalled border talks between Meghalaya and Assam will resume once the 2026 Assam Assembly electoral process concludes and a new government is formed.
Addressing the remaining areas of dispute, Syiem, a member of the Ri-Bhoi Regional Committee on the border, acknowledged recent skirmishes – including fatal clashes in October 2025 over paddy harvesting – and the legislator admitted that isolated incidents continue even in areas where resolutions were previously sought.
He maintained that these friction points must be systematically addressed to ensure a long-term, permanent settlement between the two states.
For over five decades, the dispute centered on 12 specific sectors along the 885km border, including Langpih, Blocks 1 and 2, and Khanduli.
The first phase of the border dispute was resolved in March 2022 but four years on seemingly little progress has been made on the harder-to-fix second phase areas, with the Assam side frequently delaying the process.
