The Laban circle of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has demanded the immediate removal of supposed illegal settlers from Maxwellton Estate.
The pressure group’s representatives today met East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo, and told her that 150 households have illegally occupied the parcel of government property in Kench’s Trace.
The KSU also expressed surprise that the settlers are also raising cattle in the area, despite the land falling under a municipal area where such activities should not be permitted. The group also claimed that the place has also turned into a haven for all sorts of illicit activities that have given rise to untoward incidents from time to time.
Meanwhile, the KSU also urged the DC to take steps to see that signboards with ‘Defence Land’ written on them and put up by the army on public roads and private properties are removed to prevent any inconveniences to the public.
