People from 21 villages of Mawshynrut area of West Khasi Hills have decided to stage a sit-in demonstration at the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) from November 9 as a mark of protest against tagging of their villages with Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency.
The decision was taken by the villagers at a meeting held yesterday at Mawsmai which was also attended by headmen of these areas. They have also formed a joint action committee to spearhead the agitation.
The 21 villages fall under three polling stations of Misei, Langdongdai bad Mawsmai.
It may be mentioned that these villages that were under Mawshynrut constituency have been brought under Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency under the delimitation of constituencies carried out by the KHADC.
Joint action committee chairman Jeremiia Dkhar said that the villagers are firm with their demand for retaining the 21 villages under Mawshynrut constituency.
“The KHADC has taken a wrong decision to tag us with Rambrai Jyrngam constituency. We will go ahead with our proposed agitation in the KHADC office complex. If anything happens to any of the villagers, the Chief Executive Member and Deputy Chief Executive Member should take the responsibility,” Dkhar said.
The special session of KHADC on August 23 unanimously approved an amendment bill to reorganise a number of constituencies.
The bill, titled Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (Constitution of District Council) (Amendment) Rules 2024, aims to rationalise the number of voters across constituencies.
However, the bill is yet to receive the assent of the Governor. Sources said that the State government is examining the bill.
