With around two dozen people who were arrested in the infamous Rimpu Bagan having approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) alleging that they were wrongfully accused, the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hopeful that its own vice-president will be cleared.
Bernard Marak, the Tura MDC, had been arrested while on the run after police raided his property, Rimpu Bagan, in July on suspicion that it was being used for prostitution and other immoral activities. Scores of people were detained by police during the raid.
BJP state president Ernest Mawrie said today that the party has also received a report from the 24 accused who are protesting their innocence. Many of them have claimed that the police falsely accused them of serious charges, such as being involved in the sex trade.
Mawrie said that he is now hopeful that the NHRC will take action and ask the concerned police officers to explain their actions. He also said that it is clearly indicated that some of the charges against Marak are false.
“The police had asked for custody and the court rejected the request, so the matter is very clear,” Mawrie said.
