While many parts of Shillong continue to suffer from acute water scarcity, the residents of Mawpun-Umlyngka today rejoiced to see the flow of mains water after decades of waiting.
Hundreds of residents of Mawpun-Umlyngka came out to witness the flow of the water through provision of the Public Health Engineering Department in the presence of their local MLA, Hamletson Dohling.
Speaking to reporters, the Rangbah Shnong of Umlyngka, Treki Lakiang, expressed delight that after several years the water supply in the area has materialized and is hopeful that, within this year, every household in the area will be blessed with water connections.
Until now, residents had to buy water from private suppliers or through borewells.
Informing that there are over 300 households in Mawpun, he further said that even though the PHE project is for household connections, the residents also want a public tap connection for the benefit of tenants and farmers.
