People of Mawlai has announced August 15 a ‘black flag day’ in the entire area to protest the killing of HNLC ex-general secretary, Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, who was also the resident of Mawlai Kynton Massar.
The announcement was made on Saturday by various pressure groups under the banner, ‘Ka Sur ki Nong Mawlai’ who also announced a spontaneous black out protest for five minutes from 7 pm the same day.
“We will raise black flags in various points of Mawlai tomorrow, which is also the funeral day of bah Cherishterfield, as a mark of protest against the government and the police department for their dastardly act,” leaders of the group told reporters.
The group has also decided to meet Chief Minister Conrad Sangma with a demand to institute an independent probe to be headed by a retired judge into the killing of its resident.
Rapborlang Nongrum who is also KSU leader said Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui should be removed, including those policemen involved in the killing.
Meanwhile the Hynñiewtrep Youths Council today plastered Motphran with banners denouncing the killing. “No-justices no peace, prosecute Meghalaya police, govt Meghalaya, We demand immediate step down of Home Minister Lakmen Rymbui, if we don’t stand now we could be next” read the banners.
