The United Democratic Party (UDP) in Mawkyrwat constituency today suffered a huge setback as all its functionaries resigned en masse from the party.
The functionaries who quit the party included those from the circle, youth wing and women’s wing.
Led by party leader Medalsing Lyngdoh, the functionaries also folded the UDP flag and handed it over to the president of UDP Mawkyrwat Circle.
The UDP functionaries were unhappy with the decision of the party leadership to allot the party ticket to Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar to contest the 2023 Assembly election from Mawkyrwat constituency.
Tongkhar who belongs to HSPDP is presently the sitting MLA from Mawkyrwat and also a minister in the MDA cabinet.
Speaking to media persons, the UDP leaders who have resigned from the party said that they have told the party leadership that the ticket should be decided at the constituency level since they understood the ground reality better.
“We have conveyed this to the party leadership but it was firm with its decision to give the ticket to Tongkhar. So we have no choice but to leave the party,” they said.
Moreover, Medalsing Lyngdoh said that he along with the UDP leaders from Mawkyrwat constituency would not support the candidature of Tongkhar.
“Together, we have decided to quit the party and we will meet soon to decide our future course of action,” he said.
