The office of the Child Development Project Officer in Mawkyrwat has taken steps to promote nutritious food through Kitchen Garden by organising a plantation drive and demonstration which is part of the Poshan Maah.
The event was organised today for school teachers and Anganwadi workers at Maharam Government Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat.
CDPO, ICDS project H. Sahkhar said Kitchen Garden will bolster growth because of the nutritious and organic vegetables, fruits and herbs. She spoke about the five types of illness caused by malnutrition (wasting, stunting, underweight, deficiencies in vitamins and minerals and anaemia) and advised teachers to encourage adolescent boys and girls to take nutritious food for holistic growth.
Sahkhar suggested that they need to take Iron Folic Acid to increase their iron level and deworming tablets to eliminate parasitic worms and larvae so that they absorb the critical nutrients needed to stay healthy.
Stating that tea intake should be minimal Sahkhar said tea interferes with absorption of iron that leads to dehydration, increased anxiety and restlessness, and may weaken the kidney.
Wanniang Inspector, o/o District Horticulture Officer, Mawkyrwat, explained about Kitchen Garden and said it is an important space for a person to relax, get nutritious food and fresh air for healthy living. He urged people to take interest in growing their own vegetables using organic manure so that Mawkyrwat could increase vegetables production for self-consumption and for supply of fresh vegetables and fruits to the market.
