National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from various educational institutions in the city went on a mass cleaning drive around Shillong and picked up 1.2 tonnes of plastic waste yesterday.
While it is an extraordinary effort, it also amply demonstrates just how much litter has been improperly dumped around the state capital.
Some 250 NSS volunteers from North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), William Carey University, Shillong Polytechnic, St Mary’s College, Shillong Law College, Shillong Commerce College, Shillong College, Nabon Women’s Synod College, Seng Khasi College, St Anthony’s College and staff from the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) participated in the Swachhta drive to conclude the near month-long Clean India Campaign 2.0.
The event started with cleaning of Polo Parking Lot and adjoining areas such as Lawmali, Polo Market, Fourth Furlong, Forest Colony, Lumshyiap, Jail Road and Shillong Golf Club.
The massive amount of waste was safely disposed of by the SMB, a press release stated.
