A solemn ceremony was held to pay final respects to Sepoy Aibok Madur, who was killed in the line of duty at the Siachen Glacier in Ladakh on November 7.
The funeral was held in Madur’s wife’s village of Lyngkhoi, East Khasi Hills. The final rites were carried out according to the Roman Catholic faith.
Following his death, Madur’s body was brought to his mother’s home in Mawbri village in Ri-Bhoi on November 9 before being taken to his wife’s house yesterday.
In addition to the religious rituals, the Assam Regimental Centre also honoured Madur, with mourners gathering to pay their respects.
After the ceremony, Assam Regiment troops carried the coffin and loaded it into an army vehicle, which then proceeded to the cemetery.
Along the route, school children and villagers, holding Indian flags, lined the streets to bid farewell to the fallen soldier. He leaves behind his wife and a 1-year-old son.
Madur was part of the GOC, Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment.
