Umiam Police and the Shillong Crime Unit today recovered the body of a man believed to be that of the same person whose head was found two days ago.
A highly decomposed decapitated head was found by villagers on Tuesday.
Today, the authorities recovered a body, sans head, on the shore of Umiam lake. It is strongly suspected that the head and body belong to one and the same man.
According to sources, the victim, who is believed to have been murdered, has been identified as Omeka Myrthong, a father of five, from Mawlaingut village in East Khasi Hills.
It is suspected that the murderer/s killed Myrthong and then decapitated him before burying the body parts.
Umiam Police and the Shillong Crime Unit transported the body to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for an autopsy.
According to the secretary of Mawlaingut village, Saindor Nongbsap, it was informed by Myrthong’s relative that he had gone missing on February 26 and, despite a search party launched by the village, the victim could not be found.
Myrthong was a well-liked individual and there were no negative reports about him in the village, Nongbsap added.
