A curious case of a man who had been stabbed has been occupying the time of police in East Khasi Hills.
It was brought to the attention of police on the morning of March 19 that a man, Zechariah Sohthiang (25), had been stabbed in Police Bazaar and was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital.
Sohthiang, of Mawtari, Myrdon, Umsning informed the authorities that he was attacked at 3am that morning by three to four unknown miscreants. Due to the seriousness of his wounds, the victim was taken from Civil Hospital to NEIGRIHMS under police escort.
However, Sohthiang’s story since then has contained “conflicting and contradictory statements”, police said in a release today, regarding the place and time of occurrence and in the description of the suspects.
It later emerged that on the night of March 18 Sohthiang had forcefully entered a private vehicle outside Hotel Pegasus in Police Bazaar at around 9:45pm and requested those inside to help him recover his scooty, which he claimed had met with an accident in Mawprem. Bizarrely, on reaching Mawprem, Sohthiang then told the occupants of the car that he had, in fact, been stabbed and requested that they drop him at his temporary residence in Mawshbuit.
This they did, reaching the village at 12:30am. Sohthiang was then taken by an ambulance his relatives sent for to Civil Hospital.
Today, Sohthiang has changed his story and said that he had been stabbed by an unknown female near Hotel Pegasus and that he can identify her. Police are investigating.
