Shillong, Oct 4: A man who was confirmed dead after being electrocuted in a cowshed in Mylliem Mawwan, East Khasi Hills district on October 2, was identified on Saturday.
The deceased, Pynbeit Sohkhlet, was a resident of Laitlyngkot village. He was a hardened thief with multiple theft cases against him.
The incident occurred when Sohkhlet allegedly attempted to steal cattle from the cowshed, which had been electrified by the owner, Staibon Nongdhar, as a deterrent following a previous theft.
Nongdhar claimed that the electricity supply was intended to protect her cattle, not to harm potential thieves.
A sharp weapon was recovered near Sohkhlet’s body, and local authorities confirmed that no one from the village recognised him.
C Lyngdoh, Rangbah Shnong of Mylliem Mawwan said that personnel from Pynursla Police Station confirmed that he was from Laitlyngkot.
After completing necessary procedures, the police took Sohkhlet’s body to Civil Hospital Shillong before handing it over to his family.
Livestock theft is a growing concern in the area, with recent reports of cattle being smuggled into Bangladesh.
In response to such incidents, some farmers have resorted to electrifying their farms to deter thieves.
However, this incident highlights the risks associated with such measures.
