A 55-year-old man accused of rape allegedly died by suicide inside a police lockup in Williamnagar under East Garo Hills district, police said today.
The deceased identified as Jitman M Sangma was booked and arrested under sections of rape and sections of POCSO on August 17 by the police after the family of the victim lodged a complaint accusing him of sexual assault.
“The accused was found hanging using his vest (undergarments) tied to the ventilation grill of the police lock-up at around 9.40 pm while checking by the on-duty sentry,” Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kumar Ambedkar said.
A magisterial enquiry was initiated to probe into the matter, he said.
