Shillong, Mar 10: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to make public a notification detailing on-street parking guidelines and no-parking zones, which includes information on vehicle accommodation limits.
A division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh heard an affidavit detailing efforts taken by the government to streamline street vending and traffic.
The state government said it is taking all possible action to ease traffic congestion in and around the city and a notification was issued on parking, on-street parking and no parking zone under Sardar, Pasteur and Cantonment area, East Khasi Hills District.
The government said the chart evidences the location; the proposed on-street parking; purpose and number of vehicles to be accommodated.
To this, the court said the concerned department should upload the information on the website before April 7.
In its submission, the government told the court that consultations were held with various stakeholders to discuss the regulation of taxi parking and embarkation points as well as identifying parking areas. An online portal (https://invest.meghalaya.gov.in/) was launched for considering parking facilities on land owned by private entities.
Moreover, Shillong Smart City Limited is managing seven key projects that focus on constructing multi-level car parking spaces as well as revamping existing parking lots. Out of these projects, two have been completed: construction of a commercial complex at Polo, Shillong with 86 parking spaces and the mechanised multilevel car part at Vivekananda Road near the Additional Secretariat with 58 parking spaces.
Meanwhile, the senior counsel for the petitioner told the court that there are certain areas where parking is permitted on public roads and that fees are being collected by unknown persons with no receipts issued.
