A major fire was averted near the new Umsning C&RD Block office caused by burning of forests last night.
Police said the fire was controlled due to timely response from Umsning police station and Umiam Fire and Emergency Services led by LFM Litterson Chyne.
Urging the public to take precautionary measures, police said for emergency people can call 112 or inform the Police Control Room at mobile numbers 9856084514 or 8730940080.
Meanwhile, District Magistrate of Ri-Bhoi, Abhilash Baranwal in response to the heightened risk of wildfires, which pose a serious threat to lives, property and the environment, has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the BNSS, banning the burning of forests during the ongoing dry season.
With rising temperatures and dry conditions, forest fires have become a growing concern, endangering nearby settlements and leading to extensive environmental damage. The order strictly forbids any form of deliberate burning in forested areas, warning that violations will be met with strict legal action.
Members of the public have been told to remain vigilant and report cases of forest fire to officials.
Any individual found violating the prohibitory order will be dealt with as per the law.
