Mairang will attain district status by Independence Day, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said today.
The process of upgrading the civil sub-division to a full district has been slow because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the CM said today.
The new Mairang district, the 12th in Meghalaya, will incorporate Mairang and Mawthadraishan Assembly constituencies, which are currently in West Khasi Hills.
“We will do our best to make Mairang district functional before August 15 this year,” Sangma said.
Meanwhile, on the demand to upgrade Sohra civil sub-division to a district as well, the CM said that geography is proving a hurdle when it comes to mapping the deep valleys that divide Sohra from Pynursla.
He said that Mairang is at the bottom of the sustainable development goals and the main purpose of upgrading it to a district is to push up the standards of living.
Sangma said that the size and economic standards of West Khasi Hills have been neglected and to bring development and raise the livelihood of the people the only way is to bring administration closer to the citizenry.
