South West Garo Hills police announced a total of eight arrests in connection with the brutal assault and gang rape of a minor girl at Gandhipara villa during the annual Chenga Benga Mela near Garobadha on April 16.
Superintendent of Police, Vikas Kumar Yadav said one person was arrested today in a joint operation with Assam police from a local market called Tippa Bara Bazar in Mankachar area of Assam.
He said the arrest was significant, since the person of interest in police net was none other than the main instigator and main perpetrator of the heinous crime.
Yadav informed that the accused will be produced before the competent POCSO Court tomorrow.
Earlier, police detained four suspects and following comprehensive interrogations and technical analysis, an additional three suspects were apprehended yesterday.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Priyank Kanoongo reached Ampati today afternoon to conduct a fact finding mission on the gruesome crime against the minors.
Kanoongo was accompanied by Meghalaya secretary for social welfare, Israel Ingty and member secretary of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Mary Ann Kharbhih.
