The Meghalaya Mahila Congress has condemned the brutal assault that led to the death of one person in Golf Links last week while calling for calm among the citizenry.
In a press release today, state Mahila Congress President Joplyn Scott Shylla also questioned why it has taken the police so long to arrest the perpetrators and demanded the Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, resign if his department “cannot ensure justice”.
The assault occurred on the evening of March 21, with one victim, Pherlangroy Myrthong (20) expiring from his injuries yesterday morning.
“Such incidents tend to add fuel to the fire and may also lead to a law and order breakdown,” Shylla said.
She also criticized the police for being able to act quickly against pressure groups but not speedily enough when ordinary folk are attacked.
“The party is of the view that if the Home Minister, who is in charge and holds the Police Department in his hands, cannot ensure justice, it would be prudent of him to step down and hand it over to someone who is capable,” Shylla added.
Meanwhile, the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has also condemned the incident and demanded immediate arrest of people responsible. It claimed that the community is being singled out by other communities and that the government is turning a blind eye towards such incidents.
